It's hard to predict the outcomes of the legal disputes you mentioned
earlier. However, the registration conflicts seen in some of these new
Internet suffixes shows the apparently strong desires of many online
community members for recognizable domain names. 

One way to satisfy these desires is a widescale rollout of new generic
top-level domains. As many people have pointed out, more gTLDs would allow
Internet speakers to use recognizable channels with less fear of treading on
the intellectual property rights of others. Whether ICANN will actually
adopt such an approach remains an open question.
