[NCUC-EC] Durban Travel Support

Hi

Thanks for the notification Ed, and good luck with the toe.

Kathy Kleinman will be on the closed generic panel remotely. I know we spoke months ago about whether she'd be able to come to Durban but amidst the fog of mail this morning can't remember what she said. I think it'd be worth going back to her. Although actually, as of an hour ago we now also have Wendy's NCSG slot to fill, so there's also that possibility. It's currently 3am in California but when Robin's online hopefully we sort that quickly.

My other suggestion would Nuno Garcia, who was on the EC last year. I saw him at EuroDIG in Lisbon last week and at least at that point he indicated that he was available should any travel slots open (this was in light of known NCSG vacancies). He'd like to get more involved and like Kathy wouldn't have any visa issues to contend with.

Would Kathy or Nuno be ok with those of EC members who are in mail contact today? Or do you have an alternative?

Thanks

Bill

It's nothing serious, hammertoe surgery, but it is something I really wanted to get done in the United Kingdom prior to my return to the U.S.A. Medical care in the United Kingdom is free, medical care in the United States is far from free. U.K. medical care is also very centralised and once surgery is agreed scheduling is done without consultation with the patient. You just get a letter in the mail, as has occurred here. I did know this was a possibility but with the NHS little is predictable.

I will obviously be able to participate remotely and there is a chance I will be able to attend the first few days of the conference, including Constituency Day, at my own expense. I need to talk to the nice people who insured my trip to see what my options are as I had already paid for my own plane ticket. I know I can get a refund, I don't know if I can change dates. I'll check that upon my return to Leeds on Wednesday. I believe that those who accept travel support have a moral obligation to attend the entire Meeting, which I'm now unable to do.

I'll be offline at concerts in Paris and London through the first part of next week and realize prompt action needs to be taken. If there is a problem finding someone who can commit so close to the Meeting consideration might want to be given to offering support to one of our new members in order to stimulate participation. I'll leave that for Bill and the others to decide.
