[NCUC-EC] Durban Travel Support

Hi everybody,

I regret to inform you that yesterday I received notice that I've been
scheduled for surgery at Guy's Hospital in London on the 17th of July. It's
nothing serious, hammertoe surgery, but it is something I really wanted to
get done in the United Kingdom prior to my return to the U.S.A. Medical
care in the United Kingdom is free, medical care in the United States is
far from free. U.K. medical care is also very centralised and once surgery
is agreed scheduling is done without consultation with the patient. You
just get a letter in the mail, as has occurred here. I did know this was a
possibility but with the NHS little is predictable.

I've considered going back on the wait list so I can attend the full Durban
conference but that would not be in my best interest. I will obviously be
able to participate remotely and there is a chance I will be able to attend
the first few days of the conference, including Constituency Day, at my
own expense. I need to talk to the nice people who insured my trip to see
what my options are as I had already paid for my own plane ticket. I know I
can get a refund, I don't know if I can change dates. I'll check that upon
my return to Leeds on Wednesday. I believe that those who accept travel
support have a moral obligation to attend the entire Meeting, which I'm
now unable to do.

I have notified Constituency Travel of my inability to accept travel
support for this Meeting and they have reopened the slot.

Although the E.C. has final authority to select recipients of travel
support, I do give my proxy on this matter to our Chair Bill Drake. I'll be
offline at concerts in Paris and London through the first part of next week
and realize prompt action needs to be taken. If there is a problem finding
someone who can commit so close to the Meeting consideration might want to
be given to offering support to one of our new members in order to
stimulate participation. I'll leave that for Bill and the others to decide.

Again, my apologies for this situation. It might be something about the
U.K., as I know Maria has also had to pull out for medical reasons. It's a
good thing ICANN is coming to visit us next year in London, because it
appears we have trouble getting to ICANN. :)

Hopefully this can be turned into a winning situation by giving support to
someone new who can make a real contribution on the ground.

Kind Regards,

Edward Morris
