Hi all,
My name is Pedro Lana, I'm from the LAC region, I'm a male and a lawyer.
Although I don't consider any of those conflicts of interest, I prefer to
always mention, to be transparent, that I joined a ccTLD after getting
involved in ICANN, noting, however, that I do not represent my work in this
space. This also means, however, that there are topics where conflict of
interest could arise, and I am being increasingly careful to avoid mixing
things, which could eventually lead, in the future and for ethical reasons,
to distancing myself from non-commercial activities within ICANN. I'm also
part of the board of ISOC Brazil, which is a member of LACRALO, but I'm not
active there, and other people from the organization act on that side.
I want to serve on the EC to continue the previous work being developed and
to try to get more people engaged in effective work within the
non-commercial, because I believe this community has a crucial role in the
Internet Governance ecosystem, mostly in guaranteeing equilibrium against
pushes to advance disproportionately commercial interests.
Besides the roles mentioned above, I was a member of the civil society
coalition in Brazil as a board member of a Copyright Institute. I've been
active in the IG ecosystem for around 6 years now, mostly in Youth spaces
until 2024, and served in different roles, such as NomCom for the ISOC
Board of Trustees and coordinator of the YouthLACIGF. I'm in the final
phase of my PhD, focusing on intellectual property. I have been part of the
NCUC EC for 2 terms, and part of the NCSG EC since 2024. I am also part of
the RPM IRT and the GNSO Standing Selection Committee. Other info,
especially about my academic and professional background, can be found on
my LinkedIn page: www.linkedin.com/in/pedrolana
Availability of time is not my strongest aspect right now. I do not have
much time available, but I dedicate a lot of what I have left to
ICANN-related work, attending almost all of the meetings of the positions I
have assumed as a member of the NCSG/NCUC. If my other commitments affect
the possibility of continuing at a certain position, I prefer to be clear
about my limitations and leave the role.
I have advocated for better communication among the leadership and the
non-commercial community, especially regarding what the EC members are
doing, exemplified in the creation of an Activity Tracker in 2024. I think
maintaining the leadership accountable, including with proper fiscalization
and sanction mechanisms, is essential for improving the way NCUC/NCSG
functions.
I believe the non-commercial community is slowly moving towards recovering
the influence it once had, which was, at that moment, based on the
knowledge of its heavily academic membership. I think, however, that the
path to it right now is showing commitment to effective work and to
intersectional collaboration, actively trying to build consensus and to
remind the rest of the community, the org and the board of topics that
NCUC/NCSG value a lot, but are essential for ICANN as a role. This reflects
most of what I've been doing in the previous terms, trying to bring
together people who care about dedicating their time to productive work and
improving not only our community, but ICANN in its totality. I believe this
should be the largest and most urgent concern for NCUC and NCSG, and that
this should be a central part of what members expect of their leadership,
so we can avoid an unsettling future in which other agents of ICANN simply
do not care as enough for the opinion and initiatives of the non-commercial.
Cordially,
*Pedro de Perdigão Lana*
