[NCUC-DISCUSS] Updates on ICANN67

Apologies for cross posting, but I wanted to chime in on this discussion
which Bruna has kicked off.  I absolutely agree with Bruna's first
assessment at the bottom of this post.  I think cancelling will (already
is) proving to be the correct decision, and we will have to, as Ben
says, make lemonade out of this one. It will take a lot of sugar and
hard work!

Staff have worked very hard to pull together the agenda, but this
meeting will be a pale shadow of a regular public meeting, with so few
sessions, restricted hours, and limited technical capability. All three
of us, Bruna, Joan and I, have lobbied for french capability, and Maryam
(bless her, she has been working tirelessly on our behalf) tried to at
least get it for the NCSG main session, but we are unable to do so.
ALAC and GAC always have french translation so they are getting it....I
think if there is enough interest, we should be setting up for this.  We
have a large number of members from the francophonie, especially in
Africa, who are not going to get the most out of this meeting as it is,
hampered as they will be with the limitations of zoom, the reality that
they will not be able to listen live in many cases because of the time
zones, and of course the bandwidth issues.....ICANN meetings are never
best when you are restricted to a phone.

In terms of time zones, we are really stuck in the Asia Pacific region,
as the UTC-5 will be the middle of the night.  Many (most) of our
volunteers have day jobs, they cannot just flip night and day for the
week and stay online.  Suggestions as to how we can make this more
meaningful or helpful for those members, eg by having a discussion of
the days events and highlights for those who missed it, might at least
help with engagement and inclusivity.

We are trying our best to maintain sessions that are of interest to you,
please keep the suggestions coming.  There is a strong possibility that
Kuala Lumpur may also be cancelled, in my opinion, and I do not want
that meeting to be as limited as this one, so lets try to think of some
new ways to engage and work together without a face to face meeting.

Kind regards,

Stephanie Perrin

NCSG Chair
