All,
Here is a very brief note of the 30 minute chat I had with Goran, please
note that I made notes of what Goran said in my own language and they are
my interpretations, so he did not necessarily say the exact words of this
note.
1. Some have raised concerns about holding ICANN meetings in countries that
do not respect human rights. Goran explained that at the moment the meeting
criteria does not require ICANN to take into consideration not to hold
ICANN meetings in oppressive countries and maybe it is time for the
community to discuss the issue of whether to consider the human rights
indicator of a country as a criterion for the choice of ICANN host country.
2. As to LAC engagement and why LAC can be a model for the rest of the
world:My take was that the CEO initially means that stakeholder groups
within a region should learn the dynamics of working together. Regions and
stakeholders in different regions have different working modalities.
Various stakeholder groups in a region should be able to collaborate and
work together and ultimately with the rest of the world's community. LAC's
stakeholder groups have been successful in carrying out this collaboration.
3. As to ICANN becoming a global monitoring content regulator: Nothing has
changed at ICANN with this regard. ICANN will not become a global content
monitoring tool.
4. I also talked about remote participation. He acknowledged the
shortcomings.
5. They are carrying out a visualization of the current ICANN processes (
he mentioned this before at an NCUC meeting) which will be discussed with
the community when it is finalized.
Best
