ICANN's Board of Directors will soon hold a private retreat in the New York
area. During these meetings, ICANN is expected to discuss alterations to a
controversial restructuring proposal by the organization's president M.
Stuart Lynn. These alterations supposedly include having a special
nominating committee select two-thirds of ICANN's reconstituted Board while
scrapping plans to have national governments choose several ICANN Directors.
The report indicates that the Board will not change one key aspect of the
Lynn plan--the abolition of ICANN public elections. These sessions come just
after the release of ICANN's proposed budget for 2002-2003, which mentions
"[h]igher than anticipated meeting costs attributable to ... Board planning
retreats" as one of several "primary reasons" for the domain name body's
current fiscal shortfall.
