Nominet, the company that runs Britain's country-code top-level domain,
plans to allow more information about .uk registrants (including postal
addresses) to be publicly disclosed. The move has drawn protests from many
Internet users, who fear this expanded Whois system will erode personal
privacy and lead to abusive behavior (such as identity theft). British
government officials reportedly are talking with Nominet representatives as
to whether the new rule will comply with national data protection laws.
