Members:

The resolution proposed by the Business constituency is in
many ways a good thing, because it opposes the recent
GAC attempt to seize control of country names. I should point
out that national governments have absolutely no
internationally recognized, legal rights over the codes
and names they are seeking.

I have proposed the following amendment to the
resolution:

OLD:
4. That, due to the inherent complexity, the best forum for governments to seek solutions to the problems perceived by the GAC is the existing forum of such expertise, namely the inter-governmental specialised UN agency, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

NEW: (amendments in CAPS)
4. That, due to the inherent complexity, the best forum for governments to seek solutions to the problems perceived by the GAC is the existing forum of INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY expertise, namely the inter-governmental specialised UN agency, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), COMBINED WITH THE EXISTING FORUM FOR REPRESENTING THE INTERNET COMMUNITY IN POLICY MAKING,
THE DNSO

Apologies for lack of consultation, but we received the final
version of this resolution today and the telecon is tomorrow.
