There should be laws on the books that prevent incursions on personal data
in this way. This is why Trump had to get a judge to go round it when
chasing down anti-trumpists. Does Nigeria have a data protection law? The
issue of 'torture' is a tricky one. There will need to be proof and then
such cases need publicity as they test the law. If my neighbour today
tomorrow it could be...The problem everywhere is the use of social media
for 'terrorism' opens up justification for abuse. After having looked at
what goes on in the US (well documented) and Europe any 'legitimate'
dissident should protect themselves as they will be tracked down. Some opt
out of all things digital. I guess African dissidents need to understand
this, study the law and all times stay within the boundaries of the law and
avoid compromising their network. Surveillance is real and ubiquitous. I do
get a bit upset if we make it look like African governments are the worst
in fact they are relatively new to the game and will probably build skills
swiftly in this are thanks to technical support and data share from donor
partners.
