Dear Renata,
I am writing to express my interest in representing the NCUC at the
World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva in March.
I have attend WSIS once before as a workshop organiser and have a good
understanding of how the event works. In 2016 I moderated a workshop
at WSIS on behalf of the NCUC that brought together stakeholders from
the technical community, private sector, and civil society. This was a
high-impact event which raised our profile across the community and
quotes from our panel discussions were featured in the WSIS 2016
outcome document (see pg. 378).
If selected this year, I would be happy to develop a formal engagement
plan. Ideally, if it is accepted I will take forward the NCUC’s
workshop proposal, finding relevant speakers and raising community
awareness that the session is taking place. I would work closely with
the NCUC Chair to make sure the position advanced is consistent with
the current administration's views on this topic. If the workshop
proposal is not accepted, I will conduct a lightning talk to speak
about the NCUC. In addition, I will seek to be placed on at least two
panels where I will note prominently my NCUC affiliation. At this
stage I would likely seek to be placed on the ICANN Cross-Community
Working Group on Internet Governance’s panel on the applicability of
multistakeholderism, and I will reach out to other session organisers
where I believe I would add value to the conversation and be able to
represent the NCUC professionally and intelligently.
I’ll also touch base with at least two NCUC members on the ground to
‘pilot’ an NCUC Nano-Mentoring Initiative. The idea here would be
in-reach; to catch up with two NCUC members who are attending WSIS and
to engage in some one-on-one informal mentoring around ICANN
engagement. I would follow up with them one month later, and three
months later, to see how I can draw these members into further
engagement with ICANN policy processes. I think this would be a good
outcome to highlight in the CROP post-trip report that I would be
required to submit to ICANN org, if I was chosen. I understand that it
is an NCUC requirement that the selected person submit a post-trip
blog post as well.
I am based in Germany in the region of WSIS (Europe), and can reach
Geneva at very low cost. However, without accommodation support, I do
not otherwise plan on attending WSIS unfortunately.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Ayden Férdeline
P.S. I am very sorry that you can’t travel to Geneva, Renata. Take care.

Also - the brief leadership bio - I currently represent the NCUC (and
NPOC) as a Councillor on the GNSO Council. In this role I actively
participate in the affairs of the GNSO Council by staying abreast of
the technical and administrative agenda, engaging in relevant
discussions, evaluating reports, holding the Chair and Vice-Chairs
accountable, and voting responsibly on all matters. Prior to this, I
was appointed by the NCUC to the NCSG Policy Committee, where I
drafted multiple comments and statements. In both roles I have been
able to engage with leaders from an array of stakeholder groups,
including business, civil society, and government, and I have enjoyed
crafting factual and consistent messaging that articulates the
positions of non-commercial Internet users.
