[NCUC-DISCUSS] NCUC workshop accepted at IGF

Hi
+1 As James notes the money is specifically for panelists, and in choosing panelists "merit and taking into consideration factors such as diversity” is how we’ve always done it for a reason. If NCUC wants to put on a good show that impresses various parties and maybe spurs some attendees to consider joining us, it should have speakers who have something specific and solid to say about Content Regulation and Private Ordering at Internet Governance. And do bear in mind that the final composition of the speakers list must be multistakeholder (right now only 4 civil society people listed) and geo/gender balanced. Luckily, it’s a 90 minute Roundtable not a small panel, so you can put up to 15 people on. Ultimately it should be possible to balance all these considerations.
BTW this session aside, a lot of other workshops proposed by/involving NCUC people were approved as well, so we’ll be well represented in Geneva.
Being a Geneva resident who’s organized many civil society + get-togethers during UN meets over the past 15 years, when the time comes I’d be happy to organize a drink or dinner somewhere reasonably affordable for NCUC attendees. If there’s interest we can cross that bridge in December.
Cheers
Bill

I think the EC should be awarding the IGF travel slots on the basis of merit and taking into consideration factors such as diversity. But this is just my view; I trust the EC in time will inform us as to how they allocate these slots.

There are externally funded fellowships and programmes which do just that. I think the EC should use our limited resources to bring speakers for our panel who do not otherwise have a means of getting to Geneva. And that may well include people who have not been to an IGF before. The EC has done that in previous years for other fora like WSIS, RightsCon, and, I suspect, even the IGF. My impression has always been that there has been a concerted effort to engage new voices in NCUC panels.
