Objet : [NCUC-DISCUSS] NCUC at EuroDIG 2017 - Record of Discussion

Greetings, all-

In Tallinn, Estonia on Wednesday, the NCUC hosted an hour-long flash session at the tenth European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) to introduce delegates to our role within the ICANN ecosystem and to lay the foundation for them to consider joining our community. The session was highly successful and saw a number of delegates express interest after the session in partaking in our work. I thought I might send a quick update for those who were unable to attend the session so that there is a record of our discussion.

  *
Dr Tatiana Tropina, European representative of the Executive Committee, moderated the session and set the scene by speaking about the role of the NCUC within ICANN, and why it is so rewarding being an NCUC member.

  *
Maarten Botterman, member of the ICANN Board of Directors, spoke about how the ICANN Board perceived the role of the NCUC and said they were highly appreciative of our volunteerism.

  *
Thomas Schneider, Chair of the Government Advisory Committee, spoke about the multistakeholder model of Internet governance and why it is important that civil society is present in the debates that take place.

  *
Adam Peake, ICANN Global Stakeholder Engagement, outlined initiatives and opportunities for further engagement in the ICANN community for those from an academic and/or civil society background, including the NextGen at ICANN programme and the Fellowship programme. He also gave a brief tutorial on how to effectively use the ICANN website and the ICANN Learn platform.

  * I spoke as someone with a junior profile and who is new to domain name policy to tell the delegates about my pathway to engagement, why I joined the NCUC, and why they should consider doing so too.

Overall, we presented a balanced look at the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as one considers joining the NCUC and becoming more involved in the ICANN community. We made it clear that we in the NCUC are very open to new members, that there are resources available to support those who choose to engage in our work, and there are ways to be involved no matter one’s skill set.

A huge thanks to Tatiana for coordinating this flash session.

Best wishes,

Ayden Férdeline
