[NCUC-DISCUSS] NCUC Logo - Ideas and designers out there?

Just a point of note, we are not autonomous at all.
We exist only as a construct of the ICANN bylaws so therefore are under the control of such guidance.
-James
I completely disagree.
First, outside of a mention of our right to appoint a member of NomCom, the ICANN Bylaws do not mention the Non-Commercial Users Constituency. Please look at section 11.5 of the new ICANN Bylaws:
---
(iii) Commercial Stakeholder Group representing the full range of large and small commercial entities of the Internet (“Commercial Stakeholder Group”), which includes the Business Constituency (“Business Constituency”), Intellectual Property Constituency (“Intellectual Property Constituency”) and the Internet Service Providers and Connectivity Providers Constituency (“Internet Service Providers and Connectivity Providers Constituency”); and
(iv)Non-Commercial Stakeholder Group representing the full range of non- commercial entities of the Internet.
---
During the writing of the Bylaws we made sure that the NCUC was not mentioned by name in the Bylaws. That was by design. Traditionally, the NCUC has guarded it's independence. Note that we do not use ICANN's servers for our web pages, we fund our own provider.
Please note, as well:
1. The NCUC has it's own bank account, one not controlled or accessible in any way by ICANN,
2. The NCUC has it's own United States taxpayer identification number, one the has nothing to do with ICANN.
I can assure you that should someone wish to sue the NCUC for some action our group took ICANN would quickly disavow any legal obligation or paternity for and of us. We're arguably already an unincorporated association under California law. I, and several others, have encouraged the NCUC EC to file the necessary paperwork with the California Secretary of State's office to remove any doubt as to our status. I hope some day they do so.
That, of course, does not mean that ICANN could not eliminate the NCUC's role in the corporation. Of course, they could and some day might. That doesn't mean they would then be able to absorb our bank account or any other assets the NCUC may have. The NCUC has a legal existence separate from that of ICANN.
Best,
Ed

Those visual identity guidelines apply to ICANN as an organisation… they don’t and shouldn’t apply to us as an autonomous constituency.
Just a thought, if we do not have a designer amongst us, can we put in a budget request for next financial year to hire an agency to brand us?

Thanks for sharing! This is useful for maintaining consistency in design organisation-wide (should we want that).

Hi everybody,
as there are no new suggestions coming in I wanted to ask if anybody nows a designer how could have a look at it. It would be best to find somebody how would do it for free ofc. Maybe somebody within the community?

Hi Farzi and all,
A lengthy discussions on the Logo design.
Recently I worked with a professional Graphic designer for some personal mater.
I've been told that the modern trend in logo design is to use the calligraphy style. As they described is to avoid the use of any symbols and focus on their logo design on the letters.
We have a saying in Arabic "اعـط الـخـبـز خـبـازه ولـو اكــلنـصــفـه "
Which tanslate: let the baker bake your bread even if half of be eaten.
Maybe doing something for free would generate a great thing but we have to have another look at these isses in term of the time consuming discussing/ reading non-policy issues.
Just a fruit of thought.
Best wishes,
Nadira

Hello again,
so I just created a Google Docs which you can find here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UUkTfvfBEH3vbQU-xeQP6CUHD0GUxfS6eCQYRty-NNA/edit?usp=sharing
I created two sections.
First section to add impressions and key words, how you feel the NCUC should be described. We can use that later to give a designer a more concrete idea.
The second section offers the possibilty to add the already more concrete ideas. I created a table for that to keep it structured, but feel free to improve the document as you like! I didn´t come around to add the ideas already mentioned - yet.
Hopefully everybody can work with that document. If there are any issues please tell me as this is my first time creating a google doc for the list.
Best,
Florian

Hello everybody,
+1 for creating a logo!
To Stefanias idea: I like it, however I think we will be having troubles using an Ant as our logo. I would definitely try to go with something more abstract.
Regarding the proposal to gather some describing words, maybe we can create a Google docs or some document to gather impressions?
All the best,
Florian

Some very nice suggestions out there. :)Animal Planet J1. Elephant - they are smart and they never forget and the symbol ofthe Republican Party in the USA ...
2. Giraffe - in danger ofbecoming extinct ...
3. Zebra - less endangered and morefeisty in its habits... 4. Okapi - rare, even if it is quiet but it is respected ..
How about adding donkey to the list which is strong-willed, hardworking anda symbol of Democrats Party in the USA ..? :)

Hi all,
Was laughing when reading some comments here about the ideas of a logo we want for NCUC. This is a great idea, Farzi.
Please do remember a message from Mamadou and I would hope his interrogations were cleared because no one referred to them anymore. Here is what he said:
"But still searching and want to know more on ICANN policies and views on SO/AC visual identities (logo). Trying to benchmark and see constituencies which have already logos.."Great ideas so far. Just wanted to add if we can have the official ICANN logo to be seen in it so as to not lose some of the people who might miss the connexion betwen NCUC and ICANN. Maybe the ICANN globe and then on the bottom down instead of ICANN, we put NCUC? Too keep it simple and straight forward?
For an animal, I would suggest Okapi (not only because it is originated from my country, the DRC) but it can be seen as original because I haven't seen it used anywhere else. I may be wrong. Compared to giraffe, zebra, etc which are commonly known. Okapi is rare, even if it is quiet but it is respected. My two cents..
