I like these “PR things” and would support signing on.

I would oppose signing it. My opposition comes partly from it being outside of NCUC’s remit as a GNSO constituency and partly from the fact that there are parts of the statement I don’t agree with. Even those parts I do agree with I think raise false expectations for no purpose other than the political posturing benefit of the proposers. Did I miss something or how many trillions of dollars are being allocated to this program in order to move African internet penetration up from 16% to, um, 30%? I see a lot of feelgood statements about how the world needs more internet and not a single concrete proposal that moves us toward that goal, and I just have an inherent tendency to resist being drawn into these kinds of PR things.

Subject: [NCUC-DISCUSS] Global Connect Initiative?
Hi
People who are on the various broad-focus civil society Internet governance lists may have seen the traffic e.g. below from Carolina about the USG’s Global Connect Initiative. A number of civil society orgs including NCUC members are doing a sign-on letter endorsing and seeking to help steer the effort in hopes of increasing the alignment with our broad common denominator orientations. How would people feel about NCUC signing on? While the issues involved obviously go beyond ICANN matters there’s certainly enough overlap to say it’s not out of scope, and it’s sort of a pity that we being one of the oldest and largest CS coalitions on Internet governance are usually sitting on the sidelines when people organize such things….
Any thoughts either way?
Bill

Dear friends,
I am glad to share with you the final statement on the occasion of the launch of the US initiative Global Connect.
http://bestbits.net/global-connect-initiative/
We will have a series of civil society members present during the launch and I do hope they are granted some time to deliver a shorter version on this comments. A printed version will be hand delivered.
This week, PK has also published a short press-release on the issue:

Kindest regards,
