[NCUC-DISCUSS] WSIS Review and ICANN

Hi

It is really unfortunate that the WSIS+10 review meeting is counter-programmed with ICANN Dublin.  Aside from making it impossible for some of us to attend, it also screws things up with the GAC — I tried to invite some developing country reps to join us for NCUC’s Constituency Day meeting on 20 October to talk about the transition and accountability but they’re all screwed up with having to split teams between the two meetings.  Luckily, the USG doesn’t have this problem, State Dept. will be in NY and NTIA will be in Dublin, so I’ve invited Larry Strickling and Fiona Alexander to spend an hour with us.  We could also probe them on WSIS+10, they’re of course coordinating with the folks who’ll be in NY.

Hopefully UN NY will get a clue and implement some sort of remote participation.  They don’t quite have the same organizational culture as UN Geneva so this is not quite standard, but given the heavy IG component of the WSIS review they should find a way.

BTW for people who are interested in the WSIS review, it should be noted that this has been a major focal point of discussion in the ICANN Cross Community WG on Internet governance (CCWIG).  We’ve covered in the last few public meetings I moderated and will do so again in Dublin.  There’s staff and community work crawling forward on assessing the positions of governments etc.  So if anyone has a particular interest in how ICANN interfaces with the intergovernmental space on WSIS and more generally, you might consider joining the mailing list or at least keeping an eye on us https://community.icann.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=43984275 <https://community.icann.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=43984275> 

In addition, don’t recall if I’ve mentioned here ---- the CCWG is doing a workshop at the Brazil IGF in November to share with non-ICANNauts how the transition process is being managed http://intgovforum.org/cms/wks2015/index.php/proposal/view_public/163 <http://intgovforum.org/cms/wks2015/index.php/proposal/view_public/163>.  I’m moderating and I know some of the people that were listed on the initial proposal as speakers are not going to be able to make it, so we may want to add a couple new bodies.  If anyone here who’s close to the transition will be in Brazil and could be interested, please contact me off list and we’ll see if anything can be done.
