I think it was more like I was the least reluctant of the EC to take the role on :-)
But note that we did have an explicit procedure for us in the by-laws, which said that a member of the EC had to step in to take the role of chair - so there were only 5 potential candidates.
I think that is a reasonable procedure, as all the EC have been through an electoral process with the whole constituency, so have some mandate to represent the constituency even when circumstances force roles to change.

Me too. I think using the VII. E process is the closest thing we have to a workable process, but of course the Chair should seek consensus among the EC if possible, as I'm sure Bill will try to do. An election from the membership is a cumbersome, long process that will leave us without someone filling the slot for a long time.

Unfortunately, that was Mary Wong, who has well and truly made herself ineligible since, by managing to get a job on ICANN staff.

	More than a month.

While in this case we had a very close vote, and clearly both candidates enjoy strong support (if only Mary hadn't gone and got herself a great new job), I'm not sure I'd be happy about that in the generic case. It may well be that the next candidate enjoyed very poor support.
