And so it begins....if one conducts a search, 14 different hits come back associated with ‘canon’. Its connotation can be found in music, religion and printing – so Canon will be in control of a term that goes far beyond a brand and will get protection for it internationally against basic principles of international trademark law. And, this is just the beginning....

no it is not only a English word as there is "canon" in French too which its origin is from Arab word  "قانون" or law :) ironic :)
