According to Wikipedia, Gizmo is proprietary, as well

but it seems to use the SIP standard for call negotiation, which is
much better than Skype that uses only proprietary protocols. Which
Open Standard audio codecs Gizmo uses I cannot tell, the information
does not seem readily available.

So while Gizmo seems better than Skype in terms of Open Standards
compliance, I cannot recommend it, as the software is proprietary.

But unlike Skype, using Gizmo might allow me to participate in calls
if there is a SIP number I can call from my VOIP system.

I'd probably recommend to take a look at

which seems available for multiple platforms, including mobile phones
and web browsers and is Free Software using Open Standards all the way.
