Controversial domain name giant Verisign has now been chosen to operate an Object Naming Service (ONS) as the root directory for a new global tracking network. The network will feature Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags--a technology that has drawn public concern over its potential privacy implicaitions. Under this system, whenever a tagged item is scanned, the network will send a query via the Internet to a Verisign directory, to be forwarded along to the manufacturer's computers.
