A number of domain name registrars reportedly have signed on to a draft
letter expressing "continuing support for" the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers' restructuring committee. The letter goes on to
argue that "ICANN remains the most viable solution to ensure the ongoing
stability of the Internet's naming and addressing systems." The letter comes
after the Council of European National Top Level Domain registries (CENTR)
as well as Verisign and DENIC issued statements suggesting that ICANN should
play a role largely limited to that of a "a central depository of
information about, and provide coordination among those who operate, the
technical infrastructure of the Internet, most notably in the domain name
and IP numbering systems." None of these documents explicitly mentions
ICANN's refusal to hold any more public elections.
