Net Governance:

Officials from the National Telecommunications and Information
Administration (NTIA) are talking with the public about the proposed
reorganization of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN), according to NTIA associate administrator Robin Layton,
who heads the office of international affairs. From stakeholders, Layton
said, "We're looking to get some specific ideas on what should be the
scope of ICANN's mission and ideas on how to effectively address
problems in ICANN." Layton said that a reorganization proposal by ICANN
President Stuart Lynn is a "starting point, not an ending point."
Meanwhile, companies like AT&T and eBay, along with trade groups like
the U.S.Internet Industry Association, reiterated their commitment to
helping ICANN maintain its management of the Internet naming system. In
an April 11 letter to Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, key Bush
administration officials and lawmakers, they said they "intend to
participate fully" in the process to restructure ICANN and "reaffirmed"
support for having a "private sector" body manage the domain-name
system.
