[ncdnhc-discuss] Country names under .info

Vany,
Can you provide a single example of a registrant that has
tried to sell the name of a country after registering it?
I know that some cities have tried to steal the name away from
legitimate travel businesses or tour companies.

Under the UDRP, such attempts are grounds for name
transfer - IF the complaining party can prove that they
have some kind of rights in a name. The problem is, most
countries do NOT "own" their name, and many of us think
that they SHOULD NOT own their name.

Are you aware of the fact that geographic or country names
canbe used for many different legitimate purposes?
For example, the word "unitedstates" could be the name
of blue jeans or hats or a virtual space in a video game.

I would also note that your position conflicts with the
resolution passed by the NCDNHC at the Stockholm
meeting, where the constituency as a whole was very
critical of the WIPO-2 plan to create new rights in names.

Raul:

Thank you fror bring this to our attention.

I have read the resolution made by the ICANN Board in
Montevideo.

Such resolution inidcates that following the next 30
days after the date of the issuance of such a
resolution, the President of the ICANN Board will
propose a plan to accomplish their resolution
regarding reservation of country and geographical
names both already registered and not registered yet.

Please read again

for clarification.

Now, my personal comments:

In a previous e-mail I have stated that I wasn't agree
with GAC intentions of reserving country names inside
.info to use at discretion of governments.

However, and watching the abuse that such names of
countries can be subjected, for example, that
companies registers such domain name with the only
goal to sell it later to a government (or worst, to
the best bidder!!!), then I prefer GAC approach
regarding this subject.

Raul, again, thank you for bring this to our
attention.

Best Regards
Vany
