MEETING REPORT

Hi members,

Just to provide a follow up based on our meeting that was held on the 12th of April 2019 (audio recording). This message specifically related to the ICANN African strategy that was discussed in the said meeting.

I will push to ensure next time we have a Doodle to ensure everyone participates in the next meeting during May as agreed, below are some of the recommendations and action steps made by members who were present:

Recommendations:

There was general Consensus that we need to be organised as NCUC Africa and strengthen our outreach efforts.

There is also a need for mapping out regional activities and planning, a centralized tracking system to be developed for planning purposes

GSE must be engaged more on outreach and NCUC must start publishing African statements like AFRALO

Need to gain insight and more information Africa’s proposition to ICANN and we must avoid working in Silos within NCUC

Since NCUC work is intensive, capacity building will be very important, new people are needed and underrepresentation must also be deal with

Option of organising workshops within ICANN to introduce Africans to ICANN

There is a need for Africa NCUC members to meet at one of the major regional events like the African IGF or Africa Internet Summit for example to kickstart and thoroughly deliberate on NCUC Africa.

Other suggestions

-          The Africa mailing list must be used for communication and engaging members

-          When working groups are developed they need to be defined and have a focus in term of objective and purpose

-          The language barrier also needs to be broken to also accommodate Francophone countries

Way forward

Current volunteers (7): Bukola Oronti, Ines Hfaiedh, Katambi Joan, Liz Orembo, Pascal Bekono Taiwo Peter Akinremi and Thato Mfikwe.

Action items:

-          Development of NCUC Africa concept document outlining (to be populated) how our goals, plan, projects and deliverables towards the Africa strategy, pre ICANN65 if possible. This document can be discussed with the wider community during ICANN65, Africa Strategy session.

-          2-year Action plan which will marry the NCUC Africa concept document in order to enhance and sharpen execution of deliverables, by ICANN66.

-          Both these documents can be reviewed and updated annually and anyone willing to contribute or participate is more than welcome.

Please also note that there is CROP available as announced, which needs to be used for regional outreach, this is another opportunity to represent NCUC in any regional event or ICANN65 before 30 June 2019, you can contact GSE to start planning your application or discuss within the mailing list for support purposes.

In closing, our work does not have to take years to complete, the quicker we are able to move, the sooner we will be able to gain momentum for long term impact. Great apologies for the delayed follow-up message, thanks.

Thato Mfikwe.
