Dear Farzaneh,
Thanks for bringing this discussion up and I do agree with most of your
comments, the lack of civil society voices in the Africa DNS Summit. I will
go ahead and check the ME DNS Forum webpage and agenda to see what
improvements you have made in terms of adding registrants voices on the
agenda.
I am in Cotonou (Benin) since yesterday for the Africa Strategy review
meeting which is a one-day working session happening today (one day before
the Africa DNS Forum). The objective of this working session is to help
inform the Africa Strategy (which is carried by the GSE Africa team) and
suggest inputs/comments to inform their actions for FY19 and FY20. I am
here as a representative of the civil society and I am glad you brought
this up. I was invited with Sarah Kiden, who is from At-large, another
civil society space.
Since the Africa DNS Forum is a key activity run by the GSE Africa team, I
will include and will be speaking/raising this concern of
non-representation of civil society voices on the agenda and will call for
the inclusion of registrant's representatives in the organizing committee
of this event as well as have them be included in the agenda. This forum is
more oriented at improving the Africa DNS market but, as you note, the
interests of domain name registrants should be reflected and this is the
group that NCSG broadly represents and advocate for. Unfortunately, i am
not staying for the Forum but i will make sure my point is heard during the
Strategy review meeting and hopefully be taken into account for the next
DNS Forum in Africa.
I will be glad if you can share any other important issues that you want me
to raise during this Strategy meeting that will benefit domain name
registrants in the Africa region. I would also like to know what our
African colleagues here think the GSE should do more in supporting us as
community members on the African continent. The meeting starts in an hour
or so, what i will receive between now and then, i will be glad to convey
it and my apologies as I should have requested this some time ago (this
trip was confirmed like of last minute).
Lastly, I know of our NCUC colleague Muriel Alapini who will be leading the
ICANN booth at the Africa DNS Forum (maybe in addition to the names Farell
mentioned).
Regards,
Arsene
