[Membership-affairs] {SPAM} Re: Seeking your feedback on a membership engagement survey

Thanks Walid for initiating the process, and to everyone who contributed in due time.

Apologies for being able to join the conversation only now--good news is that a lot has already been covered by you all, so there is not much to add. I have a few minor points, listed below:

  * I suggest numbering the questions for easier navigation/analysis by this group
  * 'How active are you in attending NCUC/NCSG meetings (online)': this question might be a bit obscure. We might want to add "in-between ICANN meetings".
  * 'How do you assess your knowledge of the following (options: NCSG, NCUC, NPOC, GNSO)': it is not clear of what type of 'knowledge' we are talking about. it could be anything from 'know about the existence of' to 'know what the acronym means' to 'what they do'. I am not sure how to clarify the question -- perhaps breaking it down would help.
  * 'Why did you join NCUC/NCSG? (optional)': I would move it up, right after the name/email fields, and before the difficult questions with acronyms :-)
  * 'How active are you in the following committees or working groups?': the very long list of WGs/Committees is off-putting. Perhaps we should move the question to the very end. Same goes for the question 'On average, how often do you post to the following NCUC mailing lists? (required)'. I believe these two should go towards the end, right before 'Which of those measures do you think will contribute for better member engagement? (required)'

Generally speaking, it is a bit long, but I wouldn't be able to tell what to get rid of. Perhaps we should divide the questions in 2 or more pages, and make sure the open fields are as few as possible, and limited in allowed word number. And let's just hope that enough people will take it, in order for the results to be meaningful.

Well done Walid and everyone! Looking forward to discussing this further on Tuesday.

Stefania

Thanks Rafik for those useful comments.

I'll work on incorporating them today. Please check again in another 24 hours.

Best.

another point, a list of WG are in the survey, I doubt that people can catch that easily better to put this url as reference http://gnso.icann.org/en/council/project & http://gnso.icann.org/en/group-activities/active

Hi Walid,

I would like questions regarding why people joined NCSG (and NCUC), what are their interests (it will help to match people with topics and get involved them more efficiently), what they want to achieve exactly (fellows are encouraged to join a group, for professional goal etc), and I do agree about checking for time commitment to get involved and go through learning curve. we can spend a lot of efforts on webinars, material, mentorship but if people cannot spend so much time to use them, we have to question about the "ROI" and find a better way. I will be happy if we find "personas" from this survey and respond to the needs of each one.

I also heard about mailing traffic, I would like to know what are the expectation about the information shared there and if they would like to use more extensively spaces like the wiki (ncsg.is<http://t.signauxneuf.com/e1t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7lC8dDMPbW2n0x6l2B9nMJN7t5XX4Rs3g6VRJgRz5wvCLRW2zq5cM56dB2Rf3GmCG602?t=http%3A%2F%2Fncsg.is%2F&si=4815485689397248&pi=39b4557f-e5e1-4bc6-8ddc-6214a9320626>) to get updated.

Best,

Rafik

Thanks Stephanie for those comments. I've tried to incorporate them along with Amr's and Seun's.

I invite all members to check it again and review it before our meeting and discussion in Singapore. Let me know if you spot any mistakes (language, factual, etc.)

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Walid

I also wanted to add that a question re volunteering for committees and working groups (have you participated on x, y, or z) with some questions re why not (intimidated, too much time, not enough background knowledge, wrong time zone, etc) would be good.

I think it is a good point, but also a subtle one. I don't, in my capacity at ICANN, represent any one organization....certainly not my UNI, not any of the orgs whose advisory board I sit on, etc etc. However as a representative of civil society I spend most of my time communicating with it, dealing with issues, and being an evangelist of a sort for privacy and transparency issues. I think somehow it would be interesting, if difficult, to figure out who gets fed from the activities of our civil society reps. If I keep 5 otherwise preoccupied civil society organizations briefed on what is going on at ICANN, that info is important.

Thanks Joly for indicating this. In fact you raise a valuable question that I think we should ask because then we can actually conclude fron the results if it makes a difference or not.

What strikes me right away is that survey doesn't differentiate between someone like me that represents an organization, and an individual member. Perhaps this data is not important?

Dear colleagues,

I have been working in the last couple of weeks on a survey that I
feel could shed light on the reasons behind the lack of engagement of
some members (particularly newbies) and potential solutions.

The questions were formulated based on my own intuition, on
discussions we had in various threads and also on more recent
contributions from Bill and Joao.

Find the survey here: http://goo.gl/XlwyQL

The survey is still a draft and I plan to release it for members to
fill in after taking your feedback into account.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

Walid
