Hi all,

I am a bit puzzled. New gTLDs have failed even in the first round to meaningfully compete and participate in the market. Community new gtld applications have been marred with objections, GAC warning, and Board going out of its way to listen to what government objections are even when the bylaws didn’t even require it.

We have now come up with yet another complex regulatory framework (calling it that on purpose) for the second round and want to ask ICANN to do a campaign for developing underrepresented countries and communities? We haven’t even sorted out the sanctions problems so residents of 6 sanctioned countries can’t probably even apply.

unfortunately the way these policies are developed and designed will not make the new gtlds more relevant and will not incentivize marginalized communities to participate. On top of that, did we even consider marginalized communities when coming up with all sorts of heavy handed policy criteria for application? I haven’t heard. ICANN campaign will not benefit anybody really but ICANN itself to receive more applications.

On Tue, Feb 1, 2022 at 7:07 PM dorothy g <dgdorothydg@gmail.com> wrote:

Excellent points Kathy, I hope we can find a way to communicate these if the meeting is now over.
Hi Benjamin,

My guess is that this meeting is now finished. For future
reference (or if the meeting is yet to come), a topic of concern
is how ICANN is preparing to share the opening of the (upcoming)
new gTLD application rounds? What marketing efforts is it
planning to share the news with regions and indigenous peoples
that did not actively participate in the "first round" (2012)?

To reach these groups and regions who did not participate before,
how much before the application deadline will ICANN roll-out its
marketing campaign? How will it target its outreach to these
communities? In how many languages will the new gTLD materials be
shared? Can we petition for materials to be translated into
additional languages if members of (NCSG) want to reach out to
communities we know, and whose members may read/speak languages
other than the UN 6?

Hope it was a good meeting!

Kathy
