It's great to have strong candidates! From my experience in IGF and Diplo, I have seen Anriette's work and admired it for years. Anriette Esterhuysen, 28 July 2017
--------------------------------------------------------------

I have been an NCUC member for many years, and have followed the work of
NCSG and NCUC in ICANN even if often from a distance. My position as
executive director of the Association for Progressive Communications
(APC) made it very hard to dedicate as much time to ICANN as I would
have liked to. However, earlier this year I stepped down as APC
executive director and now hold a position focused on global policy and
strategy.

This will enable me to invest more time in ICANN work.

While I plan to become more involved in policy work inside ICANN, I feel
I am particularly well-qualified for Nomcom as a result of having served
on several boards of directors, and because I have paid particular
attention to the ICANN accountability processes.

I care about the ICANN board because it is a very important, and
influential component of the ICANN decision-making system. Making sure
that diverse and critical perspectives are reflected on this board is
vital if ICANN is to address the existing, and evolving and emerging
challenges related to its structure, governance and legitimacy as an
inclusive multi-stakeholder body.

My experience in the internet governance sector dates back to WSIS
period. I have often been part of collective decision-making processes,
particularly through my membership of the global IGF MAG
(Multistakeholder Advisory Group) and the African IGF organising group.
I have served on various United Nations working groups as well as many
civil society structures.

My roots are in Africa and most of my working life has been spent
expanding internet access and use on the continent - which is probably
the main reason I was honoured with being inducted into the Internet
Hall of Fame. Working towards affordable, reliable, social justice,
development and human rights-enabling internet access in Africa remains
a priority for me. However, through APC I have had the opportunity to
visit and learn from and about many other parts of the world. For a few
months, in 2007, I lived in and worked from Montevideo. I tried to learn
Spanish while there... with very partial success :)

I have never had any paid positions in ICANN. I did serve on one of the
ICANN CEO's high-level panels a few years ago. The High-Level Panel on
Global Internet Cooperation and Governance Mechanisms.
https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/cooperation-governance-mechanisms-2013-12-20-en

During 2016 and early 2017 I was part of an ICANN-commissioned study
into the African DNS study. The contractor who dealt directly with ICANN
was the South African Communications Forum but I was part of the team.

My organisation has received support from ICANN for the African School
on Internet Governance and, in 2015, we collaborated with ICANN in the
publication of a book to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Working
Group on Internet Governance. No payments have ever benefited my
personally. We received a CROP grant in 2016 to do NCUC Outreach at the
Africa Internet Summit in Gaborone (June 2017). I have only once
received financial support through NCUC to attend an ICANN meeting
(London in 2014).

I have served on multiple not-for-profit governing boards so I am
familiar with the characteristics and skills a Nomcom should be looking
for. My experience as a CEO of an organisation that has the same legal
status that ICANN has (Section 501c3 incorporated under California law)
will also be helpful.

If NCUC members entrust me with this role, I will do my best to play it
well and to help making the ICANN board not just representative of the
diversity of stakeholders affected by domain name management, but also
able to be dynamic and creative in serving, at board level the broadest
possible public interest.

I attach my CV for your information.
