One question though: is WHOIS the most timely hot button issue we could be exploring? To me that seems like one we could pull off the shelf any year, whereas the unexplored potentially big news item seems to be the intersection of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and ICANNistan. The hot session on this in Copenhagen that Stephanie refers to was just a teaser for what is to come. I’ve heard that there’s an idea floating of a GNSO/ccNSO High Interest Topic session on this in Johannesburg but it’s a reasonable bet that civil society perspectives may not define the framing and dialogue, and frankly there could be some differences of view within CS as well once we dig beyond the surface of “privacy good” to what the GDPR may mean for registry/registrar operations and registrants etc etc. The IGF could provide a space in which our views don’t get watered down in a negotiated framing, and in which we could engage people from beyond the ICANN bubble who are concerned with privacy etc.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Anyway, I won’t belabor the point, having contributed nothing to the work thus far. Just asking, might this is another direction to consider. Is the NCUC going to be pitching something? The United Nations Human Rights Council has just adopted a very strong new privacy resolution. And just last month, Stephanie Perrin and Peter Kimpian of the Council of Europe organised a highly successful session in Copenhagen with the data protection commissioners. We shouldn't let the momentum slip... in my opinion, we should be looking to communicate the problematic privacy implications of ICANN activities to as wide an audience as possible. And the IGF seems a good place to be doing this.
