Brenden and NCUC members,

I thank you very much for the nomination and vote of trust. With a deep awareness of the responsibility involved, I accept your nomination for the Executive Committee, North American region. I do so with deep gratitude. I will submit my statement of candidacy after November 20th as stated by the rules.

Subject: Re: [NCUC-DISCUSS] NCUC Election 2013

I would like to nominate Roy Balleste for Executive Committee, North American region.

For those who don't know Roy well, he has an interesting background and I think would be a valuable addition to NCUC leadership.

As far as I know, Roy is the only law librarian in the NCUC. As Law Library Director and Professor of Law at St. Thomas University (Miami, FL, USA), he has deep concern with access to information and freedom of expression. He completed a doctorate degree (J.S.D.) in Intercultural Human Rights, analyzing internet governance, including its history, actors, institutions and human rights considerations.

But beyond academia, Roy continues to make contributions to the NCUC and our work at ICANN. He has helped grow the Constituency, translating our brochure to Spanish, as well as cultivating his ties with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) on behalf of the NCUC (and NCSG) seeking broader and worldwide participation of librarians in the ICANN process. Roy also participated in the 'thick' WHOIS PDP WG, as a member of the data protection and privacy sub-team, and co-drafted two NCUC Policy Documents submitted to WG.

Personally, I've know Roy for several years and have done various project and committee work with him. I think he brings a level of professionalism, initiative, and follow-through that we will benefit from. AFAIK, Roy will be in Buenos Aires, so I encourage you to get to know him better there. You can also read more about Roy here: http://www.stu.edu/BallesteRoy/tabid/2383/Default.aspx

Thanks!

-- Brenden

I also hope this humble self-nomination is going to inspire more nominations/self-nominations as otherwise elections are no fun at all ☺

Absolutely, we need more nominations. And as Glenn points out, strong opinions and differences of view are part and parcel of community engagement across ICANN. It’d be surprising if an NCUC election were an exception to the rule, but hopefully this don’t make us lose sight of the big picture—our collective commitment to promoting civil society priorities in GNSO/ICANN processes—or prevent us from having a bit of fun while we’re at it.

Perhaps I should update our running tab in light of the past few days of mail. As of 13.11.13 we’ve received the following,

Position Nominees Nominator

1. Chair Bill Drake* David Cake (12.11.13)

2. EC – Europe Tapani Tarvainen* Kate Smith-Lawrence (08.11.13)

Stefania Milan Self (12.11.13)

3. EC - Africa Hago Dafalla Self (08.11.13)

4. EC – Asia and the Pacific Peter Green (aka Zuan Zhang 张 钻) * Self (10.11.13)

Imran Ahmed Shah Self (09.11.13)

5. EC – North America —**

6. EC – Latin America Carlos Affonso Pereira de Souza (Jr.) Carlos Afonso (Sr.) (11.11.13)

[* = incumbent]

[** = declined by Ed Morris 13.11.13]

Again, the timetable:

November 6 - 19 (Constituency Day in Buenos Aires): Nominations submitted to ncuc-discuss
November 20 - December 3: Candidates submit statements to ncuc-discuss
December 4 − 17: Election period
December 18: Results announced

Also, please remember that in order for you to receive a ballot, we must have your correct current email address for the voter list to be submitted to ICANN. We need to get this to staff before the Buenos Aires meeting starts up next weekend. Tapani has sent a list of the members who did not respond to him in the Spring at the launch of ncuc-discuss or to Robin's recent NCSG check-in, or who otherwise have not confirmed their addresses. If your name is on that list and you want to receive a ballot, please be in touch with him at <ncuc at TAPANI.TARVAINEN.INFO<mailto:ncuc at TAPANI.TARVAINEN.INFO>> to confirm your address.

Thanks,

Bill
